Following our journey through 1 Peter, we now turn to Peter’s second letter — written towards the end of his life, with the knowledge that his death is near. In his first letter Peter encouraged God’s people to stand firm in their living hope as they followed Christ in a world that was not their home. Now, in this final letter, his concern is different but equally urgent. Peter knows that the greatest threat to the church will not always come from persecution outside; false teachers and distorted ideas about Jesus can also undermine the faith from within. So Peter calls believers to know Christ deeply, to grow in godliness, to hold firmly to the truth handed down by the apostles and the Scriptures, and to be alert to those who would lead them away from it. Yet this is not simply a letter of warning. Peter points us towards the sure promise of Christ’s return and reminds us that God’s apparent delay is an expression of his patience, giving people opportunity to repent. As we journey through 2 Peter together, we will discover what it means to stand firm in the truth — knowing Christ, guarding the truth and awaiting his return.
The three movements of 2 Peter
1. Knowing Christ — and standing on the truth
2 Peter 1:1–21
Peter begins with what God has given us in Christ: everything we need for life and godliness. We are called to grow, to remember the truth, and to stand confidently on the apostolic witness and the Scriptures.
2. Guarding the truth — and resisting deception
2 Peter 2:1–22
Peter gives a sustained warning about false teachers. The church needs discernment: recognising what is counterfeit, understanding the destructive consequences of abandoning the truth, and refusing to be drawn away from Christ.
3. Awaiting His return — and living faithfully
2 Peter 3:1–18
Peter turns our eyes towards the Day of the Lord. Christ’s return is certain, even when scoffers question it. God’s patience is an opportunity for repentance, and the certainty of what is coming should shape how we live now.
