History

Back in the 1960s, Swindon had a population of around 60,000 people.    The Great Western Railway (GWR) was the main employer and it was here that famous railway engineers such as Churchward, Armstrong, Gooch, Dean and Stainier used to work.  Today, Swindon has a population of over 200,000 and it is still expanding.

In the fast developing western part of Swindon, a group of people constituted a new church in the area of Freshbrook on 15 May 1983; they had been meeting together since 1981.  The fellowship began to grow and, as a step of faith, decided to purchase the land on which the church now stands - £20,000 was the asking price.

In 1984, Ian Beedham became the first pastor of Freshbrook Evangelical Church.  In 1987, Ian moved to Bournemouth and Peter Grainger was inducted as the second pastor in 1988.  Peter and his wife, Nita, stayed with Freshbrook until 1992 when they received a call to go to Charlotte Chapel, Edinburgh.

During 1989 and 1990, the church building was erected at quite a pace and the official opening day was held on 30 June 1990.

The fellowship was without a pastor until David Earnshaw (our current pastor) joined the church in December 1995.   Prior to joining Freshbrook, David had spent approximately 13 years training and preaching in South Wales.

Today a membership of around 140 people meet in the church building on a regular basis. Since the first building was completed, two further extension projects have been carried out giving the church more facilities and a better base from which to work.
